Afandi Considers the Road

A single Persian miniature panel in the lacquer tradition, centred on a parchment ground. Afandi in a saffron robe sits on a small grey donkey facing its tail, one hand resting on the animal's rump, gazing calmly back down a road bordered by stylised tulips and a lapis sky.

He mounted the donkey facing backwards, the better to keep an eye on where he had been.
